Veteran US diplomat Richard Holbrooke has died, a government official has confirmed.
Holbrooke underwent emergency surgery for a torn Aorta over the weekend.
After a career spanning nearly 50 years at the pinnacle of US diplomacy, Holbrooke fell ill on Friday, during a meeting at the State Department.
He served as U.S. special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan in the Obama administration, and brokered the Dayton Accords which brought the Bosnian war to an end.
Earlier, US President Barack Obama said the critically ill Holbrooke was a "tough son of a gun", AFP reported.

"We are thinking and praying for you and for Richard every single day," Obama told members of Holbrooke's family, the agency quoted the President as saying.
On Monday night US time, the hospital was referring all inquiries to the State Department, which was expected to make an announcement.
He was he 69 years old.
