Richmond are without star Dustin Martin for two games after the star midfielder was banned for striking, also making him ineligible for the Brownlow Medal.

Richmond appear set to take Dustin Martin's two-game striking ban to the AFL tribunal, with a final call to come on Tuesday morning.

Martin's dirty day against GWS at Giants Stadium had an expensive match review aftermath.

Apart from his two-match suspension for elbowing Adam Kennedy well off the ball in the second term, he was also fined $1500 for striking his tagger Matt de Boer.

If the ban stands then Martin, the 2017 Brownlow Medallist, will be ineligible to win the award this season and he would miss their games against Port Adelaide and Sydney.

The ban would stay at two games if the Tigers go to the tribunal and are unsuccessful, meaning it is risk-free.

Even if Richmond only succeed in reducing the charge from medium to low impact, that would reduce the suspension from two games to one.

"Three things that are considered with respect to impact - player reaction, medical report, and also the visual look of the strike," said match review officer Michael Christian.

"In combination with the potential to cause more serious injury, it was thought that the most appropriate grading was medium."

Separately, the AFL has also issued Martin a please explain for abusive gestures and comments during the match.

Martin is the only player facing suspension after round-three games.

Port Adelaide youngster Zac Butters and teammate Scott Lycett were fined $2000 apiece for rough conduct.

Fremantle key forward Jesse Hogan was also fined $2000 for rough conduct, while Carlton veteran Kade Simpson was cleared for the heavy collision that left Sydney player Will Hayward with a broken jaw.

Brisbane's Hugh McCluggage was cleared for a collision with former Lion Tom Rockliff.
