Human rights activists in Uganda say they will challenge a new law that could see gay people jailed for life in court.

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni signed off on the legislation which also outlaws the promotion of homosexuality and requires people to denounce gays.

The United Nations, the United States and Britain have criticised the bill which rights groups say infringes on human rights.

Amnesty International says the law will institutionalise hatred and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people in Uganda.

Spokeswoman Sarah Jackson told Santilla Chingaipe the new law will come into effect when it is published in the official gazette in coming days.
