Rio 2016: Sailor Tom Burton brings home gold for Australia

Australia's sailors have brought home a gold and a silver in day 11 of the Rio Olympics.

Sailor Tom Burton has snatched a gold for Australia in the men's laser race.

Burton had to finish five places ahead of Croatian sailor Tonci Stipanovic in order to collect the points he needed for the gold.
At the end of the 10 race series, Burton crossed the line in third position in the medal race ahead of Stipanovic in ninth, and it was enough for the gold.

Shortly afterwards nacra 17 mixed sailors, and cousins, Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin brought home a silver medal, bringing Australia's medal tally up to 23.
Earlier in the day Ashley Stoddart finished ninth in the women's laser radial medal race and Jake Lilley finished eighth overall in the final finn race.

Athletics

Australia's Kim Mickle has dislocated her shoulder in the qualifying round of the women's javelin.

She was aiming to qualify for the finals along with Kelsey-Lee Roberts and Kathryn Mitchell.

Mickle has been taken to hospital for treatment.
Mitchell threw 61.63 to reach the final while Roberts missed out, finishing in 22nd place.

Brandon Starc has been eliminated early in the men's high jump final.

The 22-year-old, the younger brother of Australian cricketer Mitchell Starc, cleared the opening height of 2.20 metres on his second try but crashed out on 2.25 metres.

Dani Samuels has finished fourth in the final of the women's discus.

Samuels had qualified in second position, but was unable to match the throws of Croatia's Sandra Perkovic, who threw 69.21 to win gold.

Madeline Heiner-Hills, Eloise Wellings and Genevieve LaCaze have all have qualified for the final of the women's 5000 metres, the first time Australia will be represented in the event.
Wellings qualified in sixth position with LaCaze and Heiner-Hills in 12th and 13th position.

Heiner-Hills and LaCaze were also the first women to represent Australia in a Olympic steeplechase final, finishing seventh and ninth, both in personal best times.

Alana Boyd has qualified for the final of the women's pole vault in equal eighth position after just two jumps.
Ryan Gregson has also qualified for the men's 1500 metres semi-final.

Long jumper Brooke Stratton will move through to the final after jumping 6.56 metres in the qualifying round.

Unfortunately Chelsea Jaensch missed out on making it to the final.

Elsewhere on the track, 100 metres hurdler Michelle Jenneke, 200 metres runner Alexander Hartmann and 1500 metres runner Luke Mathews missed advancing to their semi-finals.

Lauren Wells failed to reach the finals of the women's 400 metres hurdles and Ella Nelson missed out by one hundredth of a second on making the finals of the women's 200 metres.

Cycling

Patrick Constable has been unable to qualify for the men's keirin in the track cycling, while Matthew Glaetzer did enough to progress to the second round but was unable to get through to the final.

Glaetzer will now contest the 7-12 place race.
In the women's omnium, Annette Edmonson has finished in eighth place.

She was sitting in fourth place overall after five of six races but slipped back in the final race, the points race, and was not able to catch up with the leaders on points.

Equestrian

Two Australians have progressed through to the next stage of the jumping qualification.
Edwina Tops-Alexander and Matt Williams will progress through to the third round while James Paterson-Robinson was knocked out on penalties and Scott Keach was eliminated after falling on the water jump.

However the Australian team was eliminated from the team jumping event after placing 13th in the first round.

Rowing

Murray Stewart has finished fourth in the final of the men's kayak 1000 metres.

Martin Marinov finished in 15th place in the men's canoe single 1000 metres final and the women's kayak double pair of Alyssa Bull and Alyce Burnett finished eighth in their final.

Basketball

The Opals have been eliminated from the Rio Olympics in a heartbreaking quarter-final loss to Serbia.

In a close, hard-fought game, the Opals eventually ended up on the losing end of the 73-71 final score.

The Boomers will face Lithuania in their own quarter-final match up tomorrow morning, Rio time.

Diving

Australia's Grant Nel is finished just shy of making the final for the men's three metre springboard.

Nel finished 15th in the semi-finals leaving him just one place out of being a reserve for the final.

Marathon swimming

Australia's Jarrod Poorte has finished 21st in the men's 10 kilometre open water swim.

But in a tight field, he was less than a minute behind gold medal-winning Ferry Weertman of The Netherlands.

Football

The Swedish women's football team is set to secure their country's first ever Olympic medal in the sport.

Sweden defeated the hometown favourites Brazil in a quarter-final penalty shootout to claim the gold medal match spot.

They will play Germany for the chance to take home a gold medal.
