Rio 2016: Usain Bolt wins 100m final showdown

Jamaica's Usain Bolt has claimed his third Olympic gold medal in the 100m.

Jamaican Sprinter, Usain Bolt, has cruised to victory in the men's 100m final.

With the swimming wrapped up and the Rio Olympics entering its second week, the attention on Australian athletes is now focussed on medal opportunities in other sports.

On day 9, Australia missed out in the golf, diving and cycling.

Men's 100m Sprint

Jamaica's Usain Bolt has won the men's 100m final in a time of 9.81 seconds.

The USA's Justin Gatlin won silver in 9.89 and Canada's Andre de Grasse won bronze in 9.91.

Beach Volleyball

Australia's Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy have lost to reigning champions, the USA, as they sought to progress into the medal matches of the women's beach volleyball.

High Jump

Australia's Brandon Starc has progressed into the men's high jump finals.

Men's Waterpolo

Australia's men's water polo team has failed to progress to the quarter-finals after Hungary beat Brazil in the preliminary round.

Men's Tennis

Britain's Andy Murray has won gold in the men's singles tennis, beating Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro.

The win makes Murray the first tennis player to win two Olympic singles titles.

Men's Basketball

Australia has beaten Venezuela 81-56 in their final pool game in the men's basketball.

The win puts the Boomers in second place in Group A, meaning they will play the third-place finisher of Group B in the quarter-finals.

Men's Hockey

Australia has failed to progress into the semi-finals of the men's hockey, with the Kookaburras beaten 4-0 by the Dutch.

Diving

Maddison Keeney and Esther Qin have missed out on medals in the 3m springboard final.

The Australians came 5th and 6th respectively.

China's Shi Tingmao and He Zi won the gold and silver medals, while Italy's Tania Cagnotto got the bronze.

Cycling

South Australia's Matt Glaetzer has missed out on a bronze medal in the men's cycling sprint, losing out to Russia's Denis Dmitriev.
Britain's Jason Kenny defended his Olympic title, with compatriot Callum Skinner taking silver.

In the women's cycling, Anna Meares has moved through to the next round of the sprint repechage, while Stephanie Morton was just edged out in her heat by French rider, Virginie Cueff.

Men's Golf

Australia's Marcus Fraser has finished equal fifth in the men's golf competition.
Britain's Justin Rose won the gold, the first Olympic golfing gold medal in 112 years. 

Sweden's Henrik Stenson secured silver and Matt Kuchar from the USA won bronze.

Fraser was leading on days one and two, but fell to third place before playing for the medal.

"When Rose overtook me yesterday, I knew it was going to be a pretty steep hill to climb," he said.

"I think those two, when they're at their best and I'm at my best, I can't match it with them. They've got big games and they proved that today. They just went ahead in leaps and bounds from the rest of the field and it's pretty cool to sit back and watch the two of them go at it."

Women's Marathon

Kenya's Jemima Jelagat Sumgong has won the women's marathon with a time of 2:24:04.

She's the first Kenyan woman to win an Olympic marathon.

Bahrain's Eunice Jepkirui Kirwa won the silver medal and Ethiopia's Mare Dibaba took the bronze.

The world record recognised by the ICO is 2:17:42, set by Britain's Paula Radcliffe in 2005.

Australia's Milly Clark finished 18th, Jessica Trengrove came 22nd and Lisa Jane Weightman 31st.
