Riots and fires have broken out at a West Australian detention centre after an Iraqi detainee self-harmed.
The Iraqi asylum seeker was found by guards in his cell at Western Australia's Yongah Hill detention centre about 5.30pm on Sunday, according to the Refugee Action Coalition.
“This is a shocking story,” Ian Rintoul, from the Refugee Action Coalition, said.
"There was more than warning. He should not have been in Yongah Hill. He needed mental health assistance, and got nothing. He is a victim of neglect. He is a victim of detention.”
The 22-year-old man, who had been transferred to the facility from Villawood several months ago, is believed to have suffered serious injuries and was flown to Royal Perth Hospital.
