With people affected by the riots saying the penalties being handed out aren't harsh enough, families of looters are saying the punishments are too severe.

There have been more than 2,500 arrests and courts have been sitting day and night to convict people found to be rioting last week.

While there is little sympathy among the communities still repairing buildings after the violence, some of the families of those convicted say the penalties are too harsh.

The UK Government knows its message of delivering harsh sentences is popular and crimes are being taken more seriously because they were committed during widespread violence

A mother of two children who claimed she slept through the riots but received stolen goods was sentenced to five months in jail. Her friends and family say there is no justice in her sentence.

The family of a 13-year-old boy charged with having a hammer during the riots are annoyed because they say he wasn't rioting but was “caught up in it” and had a hammer for his protection.
