A petition demanding UK rioters lose their social benefits if convicted of violence has already reached 88,000 signatures in 24 hours.

The e-petition on the UK Government website is calling for those convicted to have all taxpayer-funded benefits removed including council houses.

The creator, Stephen Mains, says: "No tax payer should have to contribute to those who have destroyed property, stolen from their community and shown a disregard for the country that provides for them."

As thousands have logged on, The Sun reports the website crashed under the strain as people wanted to give their support to the motion.

If 100,000 signatures are reached, the UK Government must hold a debate in the Commons.

Last night, Housing Minster Grant Shapps also said rioters could lose their council homes. He said several London councils were already considering the motion including Greenwich and Hammersmith and Fulham.

The e-petition is currently by far the most popular on the site with the second most popular having less than a third of the signatures.
