Riots at Qld youth detention centres

Inspectors have raised ongoing concerns about two youth detention centres in Queensland after riots at both sites. Here's what unfolded:

RIOT AT CLEVELAND YOUTH DETENTION CENTRE, TOWNSVILLE

NOVEMBER 10, 2016

* Reportedly sparked by cancelled football game.

* Inmates used metal bars and wooden planks during 12-hour riot.

* Youths climbed onto the roof, hurled projectiles at police and staff, demanded KFC and alcohol.

* Damage caused: $150,000.

* Four staff injured, one required eye surgery, others psychologically traumatised.

* Centre director quit a week later.

* Three ringleaders transferred to Brisbane's Wacol youth detention centre, where they were allegedly used by staff as "enforcers" to intimidate other detainees.

JANUARY 30, 2017

* Reportedly sparked by staff favouritism towards the three ringleaders of Townsville riot, who'd been transferred there.

* Mops, brooms used as weapons.

* Seven youths used table tennis tables to climb onto roof.

* Air vents, air conditioning units and security camera damaged.

* One staff member treated for eye injuries.

* Youths charged with assault and property offences.
