A 21-year-old Lebanese-American porn star has sparked controversy and anger in Lebanon after she rose to become the most-searched performer on a popular adult website.

Born in Beirut, Mia Khalifa now lives in Miami and earns a living making adult films.

She was recently ranked the number one porn star on the pornographic video sharing website Pornhub.

But it's an accolade that many in her home country have denounced.

The 21-year-old also faced strong criticism from Lebanese social media users after she appeared in one video performing a sex act while weaing a hijab.
Ms Khalifa also sports two tattoos: on her left arm is the opening lines of the Lebanon national anthem and on her right wrist is a tattoo of the Lebanese Forces Cross, the symbol of a Lebanese conservative Christian political party.

One Lebanese writer Juliana Yazbeck said she was concerned the porn star would bring Lebanon “back to square one” in terms of gender equality.

She wrote on NOW Lebanon:

“What did cross my mind was: ‘Really? Of the very few Lebanese women who are making global headlines, it had to be a porn star?’ It felt like I had traveled for months, and just as I was nearing my destination, someone used my passport to wipe their ass, undoing all my hard work and sending me back to square one.”

But the adult entertainer isn’t without her supporters.
Despite the backlash, Ms Khalifa is unfazed.
