Beach volleyball duo Joshua Court and Damien Schumann owned the Australian beach volleyball season.

The pair claimed seven consecutive national titles, including the Australian Championship, and are now hoping to help Australia to qualify for the Rio Olympics.

Court and Schumann first teamed up for a one-off grand slam international in China in 2013.

It was then they recognised the potential.

"It wasn't until the plane on the way home, we were sitting there I looked at him he looked at me and we thought maybe we should partner up here, and we haven't looked back since," Court told SBS.

"We have a mental advantage over other teams. People think 'we can't get the ball down against them, they move so well together, how are we going to split them apart'," Court said.

Schumann agrees: "Like an old married couple."

Their road to Rio hasn't been cheap. Largely self-funding their travel around Australia and to international tournaments, the pair have spent tens of thousands of dollars.
"The first goal for us right now is to help Australia qualify that spot for Australia for the Olympics, then hopefully we get chosen if we play well enough."
When he's not training, Schumann is a school teacher. He runs a volleyball program at the same primary school he attended.

Court has had to rely on his other talents

"I've been a VIP taxi driver on the Mornington Peninsula, I've driven a forklift. I've done some topless waitering, the list goes on," he said.

Schumann and Court's final obstacle to the Olympics is the Asian Continental qualifier this June.

The pair's dominant performance over the Australian summer boosted them to second in the national rankings, making them likely candidates to don the green pinstripe jacket come August.

Schumann said the focus now is on getting Australia on the starting sheet for Rio.

"The first goal for us right now is to help Australia qualify that spot for Australia for the Olympics, then hopefully we get chosen if we play well enough."

And once qualification is taken care of, they can move onto the finer points. Like who gets top billing.

"If we're in Victoria is Schumann Court, if we're in Perth it's Court Schumann," he said.
