New NSW Waratahs goalkicking hero Reece Robinson can't wait to hand the duties back to Bernard Foley, despite booting his team to victory in the opening round Super Rugby game against Western Force.

The speedy winger contributed all but five of his team's points in a scrappy 19-13 home win in wet and slippery conditions in Sydney on Saturday night.

With the game on the line, Robinson landed his first five shots, four penalties and a conversion.

His only miss came right on the siren when the Tahs had effectively secured a win.

"Reece kicked very well, he was excellent, very calm very composed," Waratahs' coach Daryl Gibson said.

Robinson, who kicked occasionally for Parramatta, Cronulla and Lebanon in his rugby league days, was methodical in his preparation for each kick, but downplayed his routine.

"I just talk to myself and keep concentrating," he said.

Foley, who missed the game with concussion, is travelling with the team on Sunday to South Africa, where they will play the Kings and Sharks in successive weeks.

"I can't wait for him to come back he'll take the kicking back straight away," Robinson said.

Gibson made it clear the Waratahs had work to do after a scratchy performance, albeit in difficult conditions, which prevented them from running the ball much..

Their forwards and kicking game proved their main weapons

Among the Tahs best was lively hooker Tolu Latu, who had a good scrum battle with former teammate Tatafu Polota-Nau, after the latter came off the bench ten minutes into the second half.

"It was old bull young bull there obviously," Gibson said.

"When Taf (Polota-Nau) came on you could see there was a bit of a power struggle going on.

"I think he (Latu) got it over him in a couple of those scrums, that will be confidence building for him."
