Jeff Robson will swap roles with Chad Townsend for the 2016 NRL season, after the veteran Cronulla playmaker was snapped up by the Warriors on a one-year deal on Wednesday.

Robson could move into the Warriors halves alongside Kiwis star Shaun Johnson, with fellow pivot Townsend returning to the Sharks in 2016 on a two-year contract after two seasons in New Zealand.

Sharks coach Shane Flanagan said it was tough to let Robson go, but it was inevitable after Sydney Roosters pivot James Maloney committed to the Shire for the next three seasons earlier this year.

"Robbo has been an important part of our team over the past four years,"Flanagan said.

"He is popular amongst his teammates and a great clubman.

"He's held this team together through some tough times over the last couple of seasons and while sad to see him go, we are all glad he has been given another opportunity with the Warriors."

Robson, 33, has played 159 NRL games with Manly, Parramatta and the Sharks and was glad to prolong his career.

Whilst I'm sad to be leaving the Sharks I'm excited and really looking forward to be joining the Warriors next season," Robson said

"Over the past four years I've thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Sharks and I've made some lifelong friends."

Robson joins Issac Luke and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck as recruits for coach Andrew McFadden's Warriors ahead of the 2016 NRL season.
