Rodionova out of Aus Open qualifiers

The qualifying rounds of the Australian Open have not gone well for the locals, with Arina Rodionova the last Australian to fall.

Arina Rodionova has failed to win through to the main draw of the Australian Open, the local hope falling to Switzerland's Viktorija Golubic.

Rodionova progressed to Saturday's final round of qualifying after her second-round opponent, China's Ying-Ying Duan, retired after three games but she was no match for Golubic, who won through to the main draw 6-2 6-1.

The qualifying draw was not kind to local hopefuls with no Australian men or women able to progress to the season-opening grand slam.

Marinko Matosevic was the last to fall on the men's side, his second-round defeat by Colombian Alejandro Gonzalez ending his run of six Australian Opens in a row.

In all, 11 men and seven women tried to add their names to the Australian contingent without success.

Rodionova, currently 313 in the world, was attempting to qualify for her third Australian Open after falling just short of claiming a wildcard in December's play-offs at Melbourne Park.

She played and won her semi-final in stifling heat on the same day of her wedding to Richmond AFL player Ty Vickery, but was beaten by Perth teenager Maddison Inglis in the final the day after.

Sixteen qualifying slots in the Australian Open men's draw were filled at the conclusion of Saturday's final round and 12 on the women's.

Evergreen Czech Radek Stepanek will contest his 13th Australian Open after defeating Gonzalez in straight sets.

The Chinese contingent in the women's draw more than doubled, with Qiang Wang, Yafan Wang and Shuai Zhang all qualifying.
