Israel Folau's younger brother is set to make his Super Rugby debut on Friday after winger Curtis Rona was ruled out of the NSW Waratahs' clash with the Sunwolves in Newcastle.

Rona has a groin injury and been replaced by Alex Newsome with 24-year-old John Folau promoted to the bench.

A former Queensland under-20s rugby league representative, John Folau played one Test for Tonga in the 13-man code before his switch to rugby during the off-season.

The outside back's Test appearance came against Papua New Guinea in 2014, before he played three NRL games for Parramatta in 2015.

After he failed to gain a permanent starting spot with the Eels, he opted to link up with Israel at the Waratahs.

Israel Folau last week joined former Blues and All Blacks winger Doug Howlett as Super Rugby's all-time joint top try scorer with 59 five-pointers.
