A 63-year-old truck driver has died in WA's Great Southern region after he struck a kangaroo and it smashed through the windscreen.

The truck continued moving a short distance then came to a stop in bushland off South Coast Highway in Marbelup on Thursday morning.

Other drivers stopped to help the man, who was from Middleton Beach in Albany, but he died at the scene.

Police say the kangaroo was a big male and are preparing a report for the coroner.
