A bogey on the last hole cost young Australian Cameron Smith a top-10 finish as American rookie Cody Gribble claimed his maiden US PGA Tour title in Jackson, Mississippi.
With the tour's big guns away at the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, the rest had a great chance to improve their career fortunes in the Sanderson Farms Championship.
The 26-year-old Gribble did it best, shooting a closing seven-under-par 65 on Sunday to claim a four-stroke victory from Englishman Greg Owen (68) and fellow Americans Luke List (70) and Chris Kirk (70) at 20-under 268.
Smith, 23, was best of the Australians and was on track for the top 10 result with a blemish-free round until a stumble on the 18th left him with a 72 and share of 11th place, eight shots behind Gribble.
Rod Pampling (69) and Cameron Percey (68) were next best in a tie for 42nd at five under while Greg Chalmers (71) was a shot further back.
Veterans Robert Allenby (72, T68th) and Stuart Appleby (74, 74th) were well back.
Gribble started the final day a stroke behind playing partners Kirk and List.
He had two birdies on the front nine to stay in contention, then ran off birdies on Nos. 11, 13, 15, 16 and 17 to turn a tight tournament into a blowout.
Gribble looked as if he might have trouble just making the cut at the Country Club of Jackson after an opening 73 but he bounced back with a 63 in the second round to jump into contention.
