Hamstring soreness for North Melbourne midfielder Taylor Garner opened the door for young Kangaroo Corey Wagner to play his first game of the AFL season.
Called into the side as Garner's replacement ahead of Saturday's 59-point thrashing of the Adelaide Crows in Hobart, Wagner's luck was short lived.
The 20-year-old left Bellerive Oval in the 14th minute and did not return and will now face a series of ankle scans before knowing what his recovery will entail.
"It's really frustrating for him because he's fought really hard to get his opportunity," North Melbourne coach Brad Scott said.
"Wagner got his opportunity and started like a house on fire.
"Let's hope for his sake it's OK and he'll be right for next week. We'll get it scanned and wait and see."
Saturday was Wagner's fifth game in the AFL after making his debut last year.
Garner, meanwhile, should be fit for the Roos' round-eight clash against Sydney.
"(He) was just a little bit tight in the hamstring," Scott said of Garner's pre-match check on Saturday.
"We think he's going to be fine but with Taylor Garner we take a no-risk approach, more so than any other player probably."
