Police will search day and night through the weekend for 37-year-old Sean David Mitchell, who is believed to have gone missing on Perth's Swan River.

Police divers are on standby while boat and foot patrols continue along the shores of the river.

The search started on Wednesday, five days after Mr Mitchell disappeared, having told a friend he planned to visit another friend on a yacht.

It's understood Mr Mitchell used a small yellow dinghy to reach the vessel near Mosman Park, in Perth's leafy western suburbs, as wild weather brewed.

His bag was found on the banks of the Swan River the next day.

Police said forensic examination of the dinghy and the yacht Mr Mitchell visited hadn't provided any clues to his whereabouts.

The search was narrowed to an area around Chidley Point on the northern banks of the river on Friday morning, but police said parts of East Fremantle, Bicton and Attadale would also be searched over the weekend.

Emergency services will reassess the search on Monday, when it may be suspended.

Mr Mitchell was last seen drinking with friends in the CBD on the evening of Friday, May 20.
