RSL president quits amid investigation

RSL national president Rod White has resigned as an investigation continues into consultancy fees paid to him.

The RSL's national president has resigned amid an investigation into misconduct allegations.

Rod White stood aside from his position in 2016 pending an independent inquiry into consultancy fees paid to him by RSL LifeCare.

The RSL's national board was informed of the decision on Thursday, it confirmed in a statement.

Acting president Robert Dick said Mr White's resignation would provide some stability for the RSL as it worked to address governance and compliance issues.

The national board has ordered an inquiry into allegations of misconduct, with the scandal-plagued NSW branch set to be the focus, starting in coming weeks.

The NSW State Council has agreed to stand aside during the investigation.

The national office is not allowed to enforce new arrangements or make operational decisions on behalf of the state branch.

Mr Dick said the RSL found itself in "unchartered waters" and was trying to manage a very contentious and unprecedented situation.

"We will continue to seek guidance and work closely with state and federal government agencies to ensure we realign our governance arrangements over the next 12 months," he said.

"This work is long overdue."

Mr Dick acknowledged it has been an unsettling time for members who are expecting significant change to be made quickly.

"I can assure all of our members and the broader community that we are working very hard in the background to satisfy those expectations."
