RSPCA wants SA greyhound inquiry

The RSPCA in South Australia wants an inquiry into greyhound racing after a NSW ban.

The RSPCA has called for an immediate inquiry into greyhound racing in South Australia following the NSW decision to ban the sport.

The RSPCA says it has been repeatedly calling for the industry to publish figures related to the number of greyhounds bred, raced and killed in SA but the industry has refused.

It says without such transparency it falls to Sports Minister Leon Bignell to immediately establish an investigation.

"The lack of transparency from Greyhound Racing South Australia cannot be accepted given the exposure of systematic animal cruelty and mass greyhound killings that have prompted the decision to shut down the NSW greyhound industry," RSPCA SA chief executive Tim Vasudeva said.

NSW Premier Mike Baird said his government's ban was in response to widespread illegal and unconscionable activity, including the slaughtering of thousands of dogs.

A commission of inquiry found that of the 100,000 greyhounds bred in the past 12 years in NSW, between 50 and 70 per cent were killed because they were deemed uncompetitive.

Mr Vasudeva said the figures for South Australia were not known.

Mr Bignell said the activities exposed in NSW were sickening and unacceptable.

But he said there was no evidence of similar behaviour in South Australia and if anyone had any information regarding cruelty or corrupt activity they should contact police, the government or the RSPCA.

The minister said the state government would not ban the sport.
