Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has again warned that the end of the China mining investment boom will impact on local economic growth and employment.
The latest labour force figures for July showed that even though the unemployment rate was steady at 5.7 per cent, the number of people in employment fell by 10,200.
"The strength of the economy, the robustness of the economy is core business for this election," Mr Rudd told reporters in Beenleigh, Queensland, on Thursday.
"The global economic pressures to which we are now subject, particularly from the end of the China mining boom, are going to impact on growth, impact on employment."
Last week's pre-election economics statement showed the unemployment rate rising to 6.25 per cent in this financial year and around that level in the following year.
