Former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has tweeted his pleasure to be out of hospital following surgery to remove his gall bladder.

Mr Rudd was discharged from Brisbane's Mater Private Hospital last night after he was admitted last Friday suffering acute abdominal pain.

An online Twitter message from Mr Rudd says he's pleased to be going home and thanked Mater staff for their care saying they were all terrific.

Mr Rudd hopes to return to federal election campaigning later this week in his Brisbane seat of Griffith.
