He has congratulated his new counterpart, the Conservatives' David Cameron, who will form a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats.
"I've spoken to Mr Cameron a couple of times, in a previous visit to the United Kingdom and we've had very good conversations," Mr Rudd told the Seven Network on Wednesday.
"The Australia-UK relationship goes beyond party politics. It will be a good relationship."
Mr Rudd phoned Mr Cameron on Wednesday morning.

Mr Rudd used the opportunity to pay kudos to Mr Cameron's predecessor Gordon Brown, talking up his efforts at the G20 financial crisis talks in 2009.
