Prime Minister Kevin Rudd could turn his focus back to business as he clears the decks ahead of calling the election.
Mr Rudd has spent the few weeks since he reclaimed the Labor leadership dealing with what he calls outstanding policy challenges, like asylum seeker policy and economic issues.
"There are still a number to address," Mr Rudd told reporters in Sydney when asked about an election date after a special caucus meeting on Monday.
Neither the prime minister's office nor the opposition leader's staff could confirm what their bosses were planning for Tuesday.
But Labor will be digesting the Newspoll results on Tuesday after this week's Morgan Poll remained unchanged with Labor in an election winning position, 52.5 per cent, ahead of the coalition on 47.5 per cent on a two-party preferred basis.
