Rudd faces the public at community cabinet

Agriculture, education reform and the early move to an emissions trading scheme are set to be key questions at a community cabinet in Queensland.

Kevin Rudd will publicly take questions from residents in his home state for the first time since reclaiming the prime ministership.

Despite his popularity in Queensland, not everyone will be welcoming Mr Rudd at a community cabinet to be held in Rockhampton on Tuesday night.

Protesters already in town to oppose the Talisman Sabre war games involving US and Australian forces will use the opportunity to speak out against the Rudd government.

A van with speakers on the roof will blare anti-war messages to the crowd before the event. The message will focus on Mr Rudd's support for the war in Afghanistan during his first term, activist Graeme Dunstan says.

Campaigner Robin Taubenfield says other protesters will also hold a vigil outside.

"We want to highlight the consequences of war, including the effects on soldiers when they return home," she told AAP.

The Rockhampton-based seat of Capricornia will be one of the key battlegrounds in the lead up to the election.

The once safe seat has been held by retiring Labor MP Kirsten Livermore since 1998. But it was retained at the last election with just a 3.7 per cent margin.

Labor will be banking on Mr Rudd's popularity in Queensland to retain and even gain seats to counter losses in other states.

Polls conducted while Julia Gillard was still prime minister indicated Labor could lose all its Queensland seats except Mr Rudd's Brisbane-based electorate of Griffith.

Agriculture, education reform and the government's early move to an emissions trading scheme are expected to be key topics of discussion at the community cabinet.
