Rudd pledges jobs funding in Tasmania

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has made his first visit to Tasmania today in the election campaign, pledging funding in Hobart's northern suburbs.

Mr Rudd says a re-elected Labor will spend $5 million dollars on a showground redevelopment, leading to 140 jobs.

There was great expectation surrounding the announcement, but the prime minister has offered the state only a one-off jobs commitment.

However, Mr Rudd has told reporters at Hobart showground, in the seat of Denison, Labor is committed to the state's future.

"This is practical stuff. If you look at the employment impact of the hundred-million-dollar investment in Tasmania that I launched some time ago, this adds further to what we're doing in practical terms as a government to make sure that the Tasmanian economy keeps generating jobs into the future."

Earlier this week, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott told Tasmanians a coalition government would launch a 6.5 million dollar employment plan that would create two thousand jobs.
