Federal cabinet minister Peter Dutton has some advice for Kevin Rudd: consider taking up golf or caravan around Australia.

The former Labor prime minister is said to be angling for the job of United Nations secretary-general, a post that becomes vacant at the end of the year.

"Most people in retirement take up golf or buy a caravan," Mr Dutton told 2GB radio on Thursday, amid speculation Mr Rudd is keen to win the support of the Turnbull government for any bid.
