Rural communities 'welcoming of' refugees

Refugee advocacy groups have welcomed calls from the National Party to expand the number of places in the Refugee and Humanitarian Program.

Refugee advocacy groups have welcomed calls from the National Party to expand the number of places in the Refugee and Humanitarian Program.

The call was made at the party's national council meeting last week.

The National Party is known as the champion of rural causes, but only ten per cent of refugees ever find themselves living in rural or regional parts of Australia.

The Coordinator of the refugee advocacy group Project SafeCom, Jack Smit, told Angelo Risso rural communities are naturally welcoming to refugees.
