The number of home auctions, clearance rates and home prices are continuing to rise, CoreLogic says, led by the Sydney and Melbourne markets.

Home auction sales rose last week and prices continued to climb as the number of properties on offer spiked to their highest level of the year ahead of the Easter long weekend.

The national auction clearance rate rose to 77.6 per cent in the week ending April 9, from 75.9 per cent the previous week, according to the latest data from housing market analysts CoreLogic.

Auction activity ramped up in the lead up to Easter with 3,424 auctions held in the week.

That was the highest weekly total for the year to date and 87 per cent up from the 1,831 auctions held in the same week last year, but slightly below the tally for the week before Easter in 2016.

Meanwhile, CoreLogic noted home prices across Australia's five biggest cities continued to rise, being up 3.8 per cent since the start of the year.

The average Sydney home price has risen 5.6 per cent and in Melbourne it is up 4.6 per cent since January 1.

Meanwhile, Adelaide prices were up 1.6 per cent, Brisbane homes rose just 0.7 per cent, while in Perth, values had fallen 2.5 per cent.
