Russell Crowe celebrates 50th birthday

Russell Crowe has officially hit middle age, turning 50 with a minimum of fuss.

Actor Russell Crowe has taken to twitter to thank fans for their well wishes on his 50th birthday. (AAP)

Russell Crowe has turned 50 with little fanfare.

Crowe, who has been busy promoting the biblical epic Noah across Europe, marked the milestone birthday on Monday, April 7.

The Oscar-winning actor took to twitter to thank fans for the well wishes.

"Thanks to all of you who have sent birthday messages, very kind of you," he tweeted.

Crowe has achieved much success since he started his acting career on Australian soap Neighbours.

Between 1997 and 2003 Crowe starred in five Oscar nominated films.

The New Zealand-born, Australian-raised actor was nominated for three consecutive Best Actor Academy Awards - for The Insider, Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind. Crowe took home the Oscar for his role as gladiator Maximus in 2000.

2000 - Hits the bigtime with his role as Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius in Gladiator, winning an Academy Award for Best Actor

2001 - Portrays mathematician and Nobel Prize winner John F Nash in A Beautiful Mind, earning him best actor awards at BAFTAs and Golden Globes

April 2003 - Marries Danielle Spencer at his cattle property Nana Glen in NSW

December 2003 - First child with Danielle Spencer Charles Spencer Crowe born

2005 - Throws a phone at Mercer Hotel employee in New York and is charged with assault and weapon possession

2006 - Buys controlling stake of South Sydney Rabbitohs with business partner Peter Holmes a Court for $A3 million

July 2006 - Second child Tennyson Spencer Crowe born

2006 - Becomes subject of Walkley Award-winning article, I was Russell Crowe's Stooge by Jack Marx

2012 - Separates from Danielle Spencer

2014 - Invites Pope Francis via Twitter to view the film Noah.
