Russia's parliament is preparing to vote on an amnesty bill that could see the end of legal proceedings against a group of Greenpeace activists.

The group known as the Arctic 30, which includes Australian man Colin Russell, is facing hooliganism charges after staging a protest on an Arctic oil rig in September.

The amnesty could free a number of other prisoners, including members of the band Pussy Riot.

Greenpeace Australia spokesman James Lorenz explained the proceedings to Hannah Sinclair.
