Russia might tarnish Rio Games: Tallent

Fresh from finally receiving his Olympic gold medal, Australian walker Jared Tallent says the Rio Games will be tarnished if Russian athletes compete

Newly crowned Olympic champion Jared Tallent has warned the Rio Games will be tarnished if Russia's athletics team is allowed to compete.

Ahead of an IAAF decision on whether to lift a competition ban on their track and field team, he said allowing the Russians to go to Rio would mean more athletes were robbed of medals.

Tallent was finally presented with the Olympic gold medal from the London Games, where he crossed the line in the men's 50km walk behind Russian drug cheat Sergey Kirdyapkin.

"I hope they (the IAAF) make the right decision," Tallent said.

"I believe if the Russian track and field team is there, it will hurt the credibility of the Games.

"I would be very, very angry and more athletes would be robbed of medals again.

"Every medal won by a Russian athlete in track and field there would be question marks over that and it would be a bad for the image of the sport and the Games."

Tallent was not convinced his sport would be drug-free even if the Russians were banned.

Italian Alex Schwazer returned from a doping ban last year to beat him at the world championships in Beijing.

"Unfortunately, there is an Italian who was banned just before London who has just come back from a three-year and nine-month ban and we have question marks over him," Tallent said.

"He was the winner in Beijing (last year) and I was second behind him there. It then came out he was working with Lance Armstrong's doctor so there are question marks over him."

Tallent had little sympathy for Russian athletes who weren't part of the systemic doping practice that had been exposed.

"I'm sure there is (clean athletes) but there are probably very few.

"It's so ingrained in the country and sytematic, particularly in my event.

"You've got to think of all the athletes who have already been robbed of medals."
