Justice Minister Michael Keenan has questioned Russia's motives after it launched its second straight day of airstrikes in Syria.

Australia shares US concerns Russian aircraft have been targeting opponents of President Bashar al-Assad's regime and not just the Islamic State group.

Mr Keenan, speaking in Washington DC after briefings with US intelligence and security officials, told ABC TV on Friday it would be good if Russia wanted to participate in a constructive way, but "the problem is their motives are just not trustworthy".
