Russia, US talks on Syria set for April 24

Russia will reportedly hold trilateral talks focusing on the Syria conflict in Geneva with representatives of the US and the United Nations on April 24.

Russia expects to hold trilateral talks focusing on the Syria conflict in Geneva with representatives of the United States and the United Nations on April 24, state media reports.

The UN's special envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, has agreed to the talks, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov was cited as saying.

Another Russian deputy foreign minister, Gennady Gatilov, is expected to represent his country in the talks.

The date is tentative as Russia is awaiting confirmation from the US, state news agency TASS reported.

Russia and the US support opposing sides in the Syrian civil war but agree on the need to eradicate UN-designated terrorist groups including Islamic State.

Russia is the main military backer of the Syrian regime, while the US supports certain rebel groups attempting to overthrow that regime.

Earlier this month, the US conducted missile strikes on a Syrian air base thought to have been used as a launchpad for a chemical weapons attack that killed scores of civilians.

Russia has blamed rebels for the chemical weapons attack and called for an objective, international investigation.

The US has condemned Russia's support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whose regime the US and numerous other foreign powers have accused of crimes against humanity.

Russia maintains that by supporting its longtime ally, it can restore some stability to the country, ravaged by years of civil war.
