Russian weather website Meteonovosti says that while the sun does not usually shine on average for 18 hours a day during December in Moscow, there was no direct sunlight for that entire month in 2017.
“The past December was the darkest month in the history of weather observation,” it said.

Near-record lows were recorded across several regions of Russia, with temperatures dropping to about -50 degrees in Yakutsk.
Local residents shared photos on social media with their eyelashes frozen over.

Not everyone was dismayed by the snow though, some shared their happy snaps enjoying the big freeze.
