Rwanda's ruling party has scored a landslide win in parliamentary elections, taking 76.22 per cent of the vote.
Far behind the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) came two parties that are independent in name but that act like de facto RPF allies: the Social Democrats with 13.03 per cent and the Liberals with 9.29 per cent respectively.
No other party or independent scored more than 0.6 percent of the vote, the Electoral Commission executive secretary, Charles Munyaneza, told a press conference on Tuesday.
The results are based on 100 per cent of votes counted but are technically still provisional, Munyaneza said.
Turnout was 98.8 per cent, officials said. Such figures are not unprecedented in Rwanda, where local authorities encourage the population to turn out and vote.
The PS-Imberakuri, which started out as an opposition party but lost its teeth, scraped a mere 0.56 per cent and none of the independent candidates managed to make it over the 0.5 per cent mark.
Only the RPF, the Social Democrats and the Liberals will get parliamentary seats as 5 per cent is the minimum requirement.
