Ryan Harris feels ready for coaching job

Ryan Harris continues to pursue a coaching career, with the former paceman saying he feels ready for a full-time job with a state side.

Brisbane Heat is the next stop in Ryan Harris' coaching apprenticeship, with the retired paceman on the hunt for a full-time gig next year.

Harris has made no secret of his coaching ambitions after injury ended a career that featured 27 Tests, 113 wickets and no shortage of highlights.

Even before Harris suffered a cracked tibia on the eve of this year's Ashes, he had served as assistant coach of Australia A and worked as a mentor for Queensland Cricket.

The 36-year-old helped out with the Prime Minister's XI and Cricket Australia XI in Canberra, where New Zealand started their tour in October with a couple of matches.

This month, Harris mentored a squad of under-17 talent at the under-19 national championships in Adelaide.

"I'm keen to push on with the coaching. In a perfect world, I'd love to have an opportunity to go into a state system," Harris told AAP.

"That's something I feel personally ready for but the flip side of that is someone's got to offer me a job. We'll see.

"I haven't really sat down with Darren Lehmann, who is a mentor of mine, and Pat Howard and any of the states."

Harris added he was hungry but would not bite off more than he could chew.

"If it was anything I wasn't ready for, I definitely wouldn't do it - because it can turn badly pretty quickly as a coach," he said.

"I don't want to get a bad reputation when it's the first (full-time) job I get."

The profession is a good fit for someone widely respected in the sport for his commitment, resilience and passion.

Harris caught the coaching bug while mentoring young pacemen at Brisbane's Big Bash League (BBL) franchise, when Lehmann was at the helm.

Harris will again link up with the Heat for the 2015-16 BBL season.

He can't wait to pick the brain of coach Dan Vettori and bowling coach Shane Bond.

"I'm lucky to have such a great opportunity. They'll be great to learn off," Harris said.

"Dan I know reasonably well, Shane I don't know at all, so it will be interesting to get another opinion on how he coaches and what he does."

Harris will travel to Hobart for the Heat's clash with the Hurricanes on Tuesday but stay in Brisbane for the rest of the tournament, enjoying some time at home with his young family.
