SA battlers struggling with cost of living

A key welfare group wants more help for South Australians struggling with water, telecommunications and energy costs.

Making landlords pay water bills and increasing free public Wi-Fi are two ways the cost-of-living can be eased in South Australia, a key welfare group says.

The South Australian Council of Social Service says more needs to be done to help low-income households deal with increasing water, telecommunications and energy costs.

"We hope all parties going to the 2018 state election will have policies to address the multiple cost of living pressures," chief executive Ross Womersley said.

"All South Australian households are feeling cost-of-living pressure, but it hits low-income households hardest because they have less room to move in their household budget."

Increasingly, water prices were hurting those renting and SACOSS said that could be addressed by putting the onus for paying water bills onto landlords.

"This will bring SA into line with every other state and territory and would save a rental household $292 per year," Mr Womersley said.

SA Social Inclusion Minister Zoe Bettison said the government's new energy discount, announced last week, would help those struggling with power bills.

"For 168,000 South Australian households currently receiving state government concessions, a saving of up to $531 will provide a significant boost to their budget," Ms Bettison said.

Opposition Leader Steven Marshall said it wasn't just those on lower incomes struggling as the cost of living had "gone through the roof" in SA.

"There is no doubt in my mind cost of living will be the biggest issue at the next election as Labor has failed people who are doing it tough," Mr Marshall said.
