SA better placed to handle emergencies

The South Australian government says the state is now better placed to handle major emergencies.

South Australia is better placed to handle a major emergency more than a year after the statewide blackout, the Weatherill government says.

But the government says work is still underway on a number of initiatives including the development of an evacuation plan for central Adelaide.

Emergency Services Minister Chris Picton on Tuesday released the latest progress report in response to an independent review conducted after the blackout.

He says 36 recommendations have already been implemented with work continuing on another 20.

That includes the evacuation plan, which is being developed alongside the installation of back-up power on major traffic lights to keep traffic flowing.

Among the recommendations to be completed is a review of SA Health's emergency management arrangements.

"Our emergency management agencies have worked with our partners, local businesses and the community to ensure our emergency planning and response capabilities keep all South Australians safe," Mr Picton said.

'I'm pleased that a significant majority of the recommendations have been delivered in full and others progressed significantly and we are now in a much better position to respond to, and recover from, state-wide emergencies in a more cohesive and co-ordinated way."
