SA bracing for localised flooding

A blast of wintery weather is forecast to bring localised flooding and snow falls to parts of the Adelaide Hills.

Localised flooding and rare snow falls have been forecast for the Adelaide Hills as a blast of wintery weather sweeps South Australia.

The Bureau of Meteorology said an intense low pressure had passed across SA but the air behind was very cold.

With many areas already having 40-50 millimetres of rain and forecast to get similar falls over the weekend, localised flooding was expected, bureau spokesman Andrew Watson said.

He said there was also the possibility of light snow falls in some of the higher areas, an unusual weather event for the Adelaide Hills.

The State Emergency Service (SES) said strong winds and heavy rain prompted 400 calls for help on Thursday and a further 100 by midday on Friday, most the result of falling trees.

Several hundred people also remained without power on Friday.

SES deputy chief officer Dermot Barry said the worst of the winds had passed but with continued rain over the next two to three days, more calls for help were expected.

He said between the SES, the Country Fire Service and other emergency groups, up to 2000 personnel could be mobilised over the next two days.
