A specialist police rapid response unit will be established to combat violent incidents such as terrorist attacks in South Australia.
The state government will provide $9 million in Tuesday's budget to fund the unit over the next four years, which it says will be equipped with cutting-edge technology.
It will locate highly-visible, specially trained officers across the Adelaide metropolitan area targeting at-risk crowded places.
Officers will be armed with semi-automatic rifles and will have bomb appraisal skills to quickly assess the threat posed by improvised explosive devices.
They will also be trained and equipped to respond to active armed offender events along with other violent incidents in support of frontline police.

Police Minister Corey Wingard said the new section would help build a safer, more secure state for all South Australians.
"It is vitally important for police to be able to react quickly and decisively to any terrorism threat and this new overall rapid response capability will be able to do just that," Mr Wingard said.
"We promised to South Australians we would build them a safer state and this funding is delivering on this pledge."
