SA committee to decide on Comm Games bid

South Australia will establish a committee to investigate whether the state should bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

A South Australian committee will consider whether the state should bid to host the Commonwealth Games in Adelaide in 2030.

Premier Jay Weatherill on Friday told a fundraising dinner for Commonwealth, Olympic and Paralympic teams the government would establish a Commonwealth Games Feasibility Committee.

It's understood Adelaide would bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

"As one of the most liveable and safest cities in the world, which already has some of the infrastructure foundations in place like the new Adelaide Oval, Adelaide would be a strong applicant to host the Games," Mr Weatherill said in a statement on Saturday.

"But first we need to ask the right questions and make sure we are satisfied with the answers."

South Australia's previous bid to host the Commonwealth Games in Adelaide was in 1998 which Kuala Lumpur won.

Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth have hosted the event, and the Gold Coast is preparing to hold the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

South Australian Sport Minister Leon Bignell will chair the Commonwealth Games Feasibility Committee.

The group is assigned with investigating whether the Games would benefit the state economically.

It will also undertake a audit of South Australian sports infrastructure and venues.
