SA firefighters head for Canada

Three specialist firefighters with the CFS in South Australia are being deployed to Canada to help battle wildfires.

Three specialist firefighters from South Australia's Country Fire Service are being deployed to Canada where authorities are battling more than 450 fires in the British Colombia district.

Justin Cook, Amy Riebe and Sam Sanderson will leave Adelaide on Tuesday for the three-week mission.

Mr Sanderson is an aerial ignition specialist who will play a crucial role in back-burning operations to create breaks in the fuel load and stop the spread of the fires.

Ms Riebe will work in co-ordinating media activity and Mr Cook will help with firefighting tactics.

CFS assistant chief officer Daniel Austin says the service is pleased to help an international partner in a time of crisis.

"Fires do not know boundaries or borders and as a firefighting service we are ready to respond both within Australia and overseas," he said.
