SA govt promises infrastructure plan

The South Australian government will introduce legislation to parliament this week for better infrastructure planning to help create jobs and grow the economy.

A properly researched and methodically implemented infrastructure plan will deliver greater prosperity for South Australia, Premier Steven Marshall says.

Delivering on an election promise, Mr Marshall will introduce legislation to parliament this week to create Infrastructure SA, the body charged with developing a 20-year infrastructure strategy.

Mr Marshall said SA currently spent more than $1 billion a year on infrastructure projects, but needed to ensure that investment was based on economic imperatives.

"This legislation will end the previous Labor government's practice of deciding infrastructure investment based around political considerations," he said.

"One of the reasons the South Australian economy crawled along during 16 years of Labor is the previous government's poor decisions on infrastructure planning and investment."

As well as developing a long-term strategy, Infrastructure SA will also prioritise potential major projects over a five-year time horizon.

It will also take oversight of the delivery of all projects with a value of $50 million or more.

Mr Marshall said the organisation's board will combine expertise from both the public and private sectors and will also include the chief executive from key government agencies.
