SA home birth death being investigated

South Australian Police are investigating the death of a twin baby boy after a home birth in Adelaide last week.

The death of a twin baby boy after a home birth in Adelaide is being investigated by police.

The baby died in hospital last Wednesday, the day after he was born in Fullarton, the Adelaide Advertiser reports.

The baby's sibling survived, the paper says.

Police confirmed the death and will prepare a report for the coroner.

Australian Medical Association SA president Janice Fletcher could not comment on the case but said women should only home birth if they have an uncomplicated pregnancy, were delivering one baby and if it wasn't in breech position.

"AMA SA does support the principle of women and their partners in choosing their preferred place and method of giving birth if it's safe for both parties," she told ABC radio on Tuesday.

But Dr Fletcher said home births could go wrong in seconds.

"The evidence shows that it is safer in Australia still in the year 2016 to have a baby in a hospital setting," she said.
