A South Australian ice cream manufacturer has issued a national recall after a customer reported finding metal fragments in a product.

Several Golden North lines have been pulled from shelves, but SA Health director of food and controlled drugs, Fay Jenkins, says the recall is precautionary and there have been no reports of harm.

"Golden North is investigating the issue at its Laura production facility and is working with the regulator Dairysafe to address any issues," Dr Jenkins said on Friday.

"Metal fragments can be potentially dangerous and cause injury if ingested."

In a statement released on its website, Golden North said the recall was to ensure the highest possible standards of product quality.

"Golden North contacted authorities as soon as an issue was detected and is working quickly with retailers to immediately remove the products," it said.

The recall includes some Golden North branded products, and others manufactured by the company but sold under different labels.

It includes vanilla, chocolate choc chip, honey, Krazy Kolors and neapolitan ice cream flavours, with most having a use by date in December 2019.

The lines are sold through Coles and Woolworths stores in SA and the Northern Territory, through Foodland or IGA stores in SA, WA, Victoria, NSW and Queensland and through Drakes Foodmarkets in Qld.

On the Run service stations in SA also stock the products.

Customers who have bought any of the recalled items can return them to the retail outlet for a refund.
