An independent investigation has been launched into the death of a mental health patient on a secure ward at the new Royal Adelaide Hospital.

The man took his own live last week prompting calls from the South Australian opposition for a full safety audit of the $2.3 billion facility.

Health Minister Peter Malinauskas rejected those demands but confirmed a number of investigations would be conducted, including a coronial inquest.

"It's important to note that any suicide is a tragedy wherever it occurs and our thoughts clearly are with the family at this difficult time," the minister said on Sunday.

"The suicide came as a shock to all and is incredibly concerning to everyone involved."

Mr Malinauskas declined to provide details on the circumstances of the man's death out of courtesy to his family.

He said the investigations underway would determine if all the appropriate processes were followed.

But opposition health spokesman Stephen Wade said if the Liberals win the March 17 election they will conduct an immediate safety audit of the hospital along with a wider audit of all clinical services.

"We're now six months into the new hospital and there are recurring problems across all the domains, including in mental health," Mr Wade said.

"The fact of the matter is this hospital has not been working.

"In the mental health space, there are a whole series of indicators that this hospital is not working."
