SA jobless rate goes up 1pc in a month

South Australia's jobless rate has spiked to 7.1 per cent in July.

South Australia's jobless rate has spiked to 7.1 per cent, a result the state government says is concerning.

Officials figures put unemployment in SA in July up by one percentage point from 6.1 per cent in June.

Employment Minister Grace Portolesi says while the jump is a concern, the increase is inconsistent with the strong growth in full-time jobs over the past year.

"Around this time last year we saw a similar spike in the unemployment rate, the next month it fell back to a rate more consistent with the previous figures," Ms Portolesi said.

The minister said the state government had a strong record on jobs growth supported by its investment in infrastructure and training.

"South Australia is second in the nation following NSW in terms of the number of full-time jobs created since July 2012," she said.

Opposition Leader Steven Marshall said South Australia was facing a jobs crisis with an unemployment rate the highest on mainland Australia.

"This is South Australia's worst unemployment rate in over a decade and confirms just how much South Australian businesses are struggling," he said.
