SA jobless rate stays under six per cent

South Australia's jobless rate has risen slightly but remains under six per cent as the closure of the state's Holden manufacturing plant looms.

South Australia's jobless rate held firm under six per cent in September but Employment Minister Kyam Maher says the closure of Holden's Elizabeth plant on Friday shows there is no room for complacency.

Unemployment in SA rose to 5.8 per cent last month from 5.7 per cent in August.

Mr Maher said the figures also showed there had been two years of consecutive monthly jobs growth in SA, with a record 828,100 people in work.

He said the latest figures showed what could be achieved by securing investment for SA and creating jobs.

"I welcome the figures but with the closure of Holden tomorrow we cannot be complacent," he said on Thursday.

Opposition industry spokesman Corey Wingard said it remained concerned with the loss of full-time jobs during the past seven years.

He said the number of people in full-time work had fallen by 10,200 since 2010 and with the closure of Holden's assembly operations more full-time positions would be at risk.

"Tomorrow will be an emotional day for Holden workers and their families and my thoughts are with them at what is a difficult time," Mr Wingard said.

"One of the real concerns is that the state government has not done enough to transition component supply chain workers into new employment and training opportunities."
